A work-related critical incident can be any situation in which someone experiences a threat to their own life or physical safety, or has been affected by the death or injury of another as a result of a
traumatic event such as an accident, suicide or crime. When these events occur in the workplace, retailHUB is here to support you and your colleagues. Our service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The service is 100% confidential.

On-site support

After a critical incident, it’s natural to feel numb, anxious, or as if you’re living in a dream. Shock is a way of telling us that it’s important to get help as soon as you can to reduce the chances that you’ll suffer longer-term distress. We are also able to offer on-site support with one of our experienced trauma counsellors. They can help you to make sense of the event and manage the feelings that accompany any kind of trauma.

While everyone is different and reactions can differ, speaking with someone external to the situation is a positive way to prepare yourself for returning to normal working life.

Tips for managers

If you are faced with a critical, check out the following key points:

  1. Ensure that everyone is safe. Straight after the event you should contact the appropriate service such as 999, your area manager or your HR team.
  2. Recognise your own feelings. To be able to support your staff appropriately, you first need to be aware of your own emotional needs and follow the same guidelines you would advise your staff to. It is important that you take care of yourself, and not just your staff members.
  3. Make sure that everyone affected has support. Reassure staff that it is normal for the police/investigation teams to be present on the premises. They may require an interview with you and your staff so it is important to reassure them that this is normal and nothing to feel anxious about. It is wise to hold a briefing meeting with all of your staff before they go home to make sure that everyone has a chance to speak with each other.
