Happy, healthy and safe colleagues

Abuse and intimidation should never be part of someone’s job but our data shows that:

  • 77% of retail colleagues say they’ve been abused
  • 23% have been physically abused
  • 45% say it happens every single week
  • 43% want to quit their jobs as a result.

Let’s Respect Retail movement

Our movement turns the tide on abusive behaviour, restores respect to our stores, and sends a clear message to every retail worker that the industry will fight for their safety and happiness, with 300 brands campaigning together through one platform and one shared language to:

  • Educate the public and make respect non-negotiable.
  • Empower frontline colleagues with the tools and micro-learning to handle the abuse and violence they face.
  • Ensure colleagues receive the right support after an incident.

The Retail Trust has built a pan-societal coalition with the expertise to help colleagues working in retail feel safe and confident in dealing with abuse.

“No one should ever go to work fearing abuse, intimidation or violence. Our shop workers and retail staff do an incredible job keeping services running for our communities, and they deserve to feel safe and respected every day. I’m proud that Merseyside Police is the first force in the country to partner with the Retail Trust on this initiative.” Emily Spurrell, Merseyside Police Crime Commissioner

“Our colleagues are the heart of our retail business, particularly those working on the frontline in our stores every day. We know these roles can be demanding, and it is important that people feel supported, listened to and valued, not just when things are going well, but when they are under pressure too. Our partnership with the Retail Trust has helped us put meaningful support in place, from training for new store managers to confidential services colleagues can access whenever they need them.” Andy Allen, UK Retail Operations Director, bp
